The Village
Administrator carries out the policies enacted by the Mayor
and Board of Trustees, supervises all Village departments
and agencies, and serves as the clerk and treasurer of the
Village. The office of the Village Administrator and Village
Hall are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. except on holidays. Information and forms for building
and fence permits, zoning variances, dog licenses, voter
registration, etc. can be obtained at the Village
Hall.
The Village Attorney
writes contracts, provides legal advice to the Board and
represents the Village in civil litigation.
Engineering
consulting firms are engaged when needed for special Village
engineering activities. They are retained by the Board for
consultation for planning, surveys, preparation of land
acquisition, road construction and similar community
improvement projects.
Village Court...
The Village Justice
is elected by the residents for a four year term. Village
Court meets in the Village Hall. Arraignments are on Tuesday
at 8:00 p.m. twice each month. Trials, set by the judge, are
held during the day at least once a month, normally on
Friday. The majority of the cases heard in the Village Court
involve traffic or parking violations, but the court also
has jurisdiction in violations of Village ordinances.
Criminal cases go to County Court in Mineola and juvenile
cases are heard in Family Court in Westbury. An Acting
Village Justice conducts the court in the absence of the
Village Justice. The Village has a Prosecuting Attorney who
prosecutes all cases.
Zoning Board...
The Zoning Board of
Appeals is appointed by the mayor with the consent of the
Board of Trustees and acts as an independent body to hear
petitions for exemptions from the zoning laws of the
Village.
Planning Commission ...
The orderly growth
of Massapequa Park has been guided by a Planning Commission
appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the Board of
Trustees. The Planning Commission helped to establish the
character of the Southgate condominium/shopping center
development and the railroad track and station elevation.
The Commission also explores such subjects as improvements
in traffic flow, parking requirements and land use.
Building Department...
The Village Building
Department issues permits to build, then inspects for
conformance with the building codes, and finally issues a
certificate of occupancy. All plumbing and construction work
must have a permit from the Department and must conform to
New York State building and fire safety codes. The Village
maintains a list of licensed plumbers. (Call Village Hall,
798-0244, for names on this list.) State codes cover
building, plumbing and electrical work and fire and safety
requirements. Applications and requirements are available at
Village Hall.
Ethics Board...
The Ethics Board is
appointed by the mayor. The Board acts as an independent
body in reviewing matters pertaining to the State Code of
Ethics.
